About OSA and John Wright
The Open Stance Academy was founded in 2010 by John Wright. As of June 30,2024, John is no longer a PGA Golf Professional. However, all his knowledge, which is copyrighted, and his name, (TM) is due to pursuing individual curiosity. Never one to take any information as Dogma or as ultimate truth, John left the old paradigm and started wondering “Why?” the golf swing occurs the way it does.
Prior to John’s writings, no one knew why anything happened in a golf swing. For example, when he started asking questions about why this or that happened, his ambitious contemporaries gave when, how, and what answers. But they thought they nailed the question.
John was embarrassed for his industry leaders. He soon found out all those people collecting fees for golf lessons were just instructors using clever words to describe motion. Therefore, he dug into all known human disciplines for the truth.
John found out why the golf swing happens the way it does. And, as a result, currently leads the conversation-migration in golf swing theory from peripheral (movement) to primary (set-up). Meanwhile, his Open Stance thesis has held up brilliantly against all movement-practitioners and their assault on our truth. Ultimately, we believe John’s work will become the standard for teaching the game in this century.
John Wright studied the golf swing for thousands of hours to arrive at his conclusions. Hence, John has been a TEACHER for the last fourteen years. His teaching emphasizes the loop of Need, Intention, Philosophy, Religion, Anthropology, Psychology, Astrology, and individual athletic response. And with that knowledge, published hundreds of articles since 2010 and six books. However, his greatest achievement has yet to come.
John’s first four books, all orbiting the Open Stance philosophy, were combined into one. John Wright promotes the idea that all 1) All human action is born of need and intention, 2) All human beings adapt to their situation, and 3) Employing an Open Stance will break bad habits in every golf swing while building good and necessary habits.
John grew up in Gas City, Indiana. He attended DePauw University (B.A.) and Ball State University (M.L.A.) before beginning his golf career. His experience in golf operations led him to teaching. His golf career precluded a life rich with his own family. As such, he remained single with no children.
In addition to being the most knowledgeable golf swing expert on earth, John began studying the LAW to return to the land without the burdens of a world in decline. Hence, John is a PRIVATE, non-commercial man and Trustee of three Private Trusts, domiciled in Malaysia and VietNam. Hence, ALL his names and written work was either reconveyed and trademarked or copyrighted for the expressed purpose of consolidating all John’s business interests in one man and his knowledge of the three jurisdictions of LAW. Golf is now his icing.

Welcome To The Open Stance Academy’s New Home: MISSION INN RESORT
I am 72 and I have had my handicap drop from 12 to 19 and increasing in the past 3 years. I nearly gave up golf due to knee and back pain. A friend suggested the open stance method and I played have played some of my best pain free golf in years thanks to you and my friend.
I find the book slightly difficult to get into. I have a few questions mainly about the ball position from the driver to say 9 iron. Hope you can help?
Salim,
Ask away.

John,
I’ve been playing from an open stance for awhile now and am a 7 handicap. I just kind of wing it is there a set drill station you would use for ball position because that is where I think my game loses consistency?
Brett,
Set your arms and shoulders first, then. Your feet will do their job to set up open enough to support your ball position. As long as you know the approach must flatten, ball position will migrate over time to give you the shot you want. I hope this helps. Always feel free to write.

Brett,
ASSUMING your swing is on plane at the top –
If your ball position is too far forward, your contact will be heavy or on the toe.
If your ball position is too far back, your contact will be thin or on the heel.
If you have the ball too far back in your stance, below your feet, and you lay the club off going back… you’re likely to shank it into the eucalyptus trees lining the right side of the eighteenth fairway, in the first round of the tournament.
John
I struggle with consistency and low back issues. Living in New York I have been working indoors this winter trying to find a swing that would benefit both. My latest involved trying an open stance and I really liked the initial results and plan to continue to explore this.
Internet search led me to you. Where do you teach out of? Where can I find a bit more detail on the subject?
Steve
Steve,
Thanks for writing. I teach in Virginia mostly. You’ll find that I am the only teacher in the world who teaches this philosophy… for now. My books are available on Amazon, but let me ask you to hold off for a couple weeks until the manuscripts are updated.
Best Wishes.

Steve,
I had yet another gentleman ask for a lesson closer to New York. I’ve planned a trip to Hewitt, New Jersey in late September for a working vacation. If you’re interested, I can give you the details.

John,
Thank you for your book.
I myself fight a very closed stance, trapping the ball and a hook…best days I can win the timing battle, but more often than not the overspin hurts my scoring.
Looking forward to opening my stance and alignment.
Appreciate the hand out and passion for the game!
Thanks
Jeff
Jeff,
Thank you for the note. I think you’ll like the awareness you develop in the process. Let me know how it goes.

I too would love to come and get some lessons too (I’m in upstate ny). A couple of questions relative to that:
1) in the absence of availability for personal lessons: do you do video lessons?
2) I’ve seen you state before how our bodies can adjust to the open stance swing. I know it would take longer, but if you aren’t available for lessons – are you confident we’d eventually figure out what we need to do without lessons?
Eric
Eric,
I’m getting a lot of comments like your’s this year, and I couldn’t be happier that you’ve discovered your athleticism and adaptability. It is real, by the way. You can also rely on your new-found awareness to guide you gradually toward proficiency.
As far as video lessons, if you send me a hudl technique video from head on and down the line, I’ll see what I can do for you. There is no adequate substitute for live meetings. I’ll be in Hewitt, New Jersey in late September if you can drive down. If so, I can give you the details.

I’d love to come down to NJ to see you. Let me know what dates you’ll be there and I’ll see if i can swing it. I’d also be willing to drive to Virginia. I always love exploring new golf ideas.
Eric
Eric,
I’ll let you know a couple weeks prior.

John,
Thank you for your book The Open Stance and Three Short Game Lessons, you gave it to me as I was leaving (R.F.) after one of my typical good hole/bad hole rounds. It has completely changed my swing and vastly improved my enjoyment of the game. Using the open stance and with complete trust in myself and the method, I hit more solid shots, made more pitches and putts, and broke 80 for the first time in my life, and have come close several times since. Three key things were missing from my golf swing – intent, balance, and release. And just from reading your book and practicing the method! I would like to arrange a session with you so I can accelerate the learning curve. I accept your book as gospel, and am trying to spread the word. I cannot wait to meet you and thank you personally!
Daniel,
It is great to hear you have found your game. I’ll be glad to help fill in any blanks -anytime you want to book a lesson.

John,
Like many others I recently found you on YouTube. I played my last round concentrating only on an open stance with the ball position moved back. My round yielded more quality full shots than I’ve experienced in quite some time. Enough so that I’m committed to learning more and accelerating my progress with the OS approach.
I’m in Central Illinois but, certainly willing to travel to work with you. By chance do you have anything planned in the near future for the Midwest? If not, where and when would you be available for me to spend some time working with you?
Thank you,
just found some of your videos on youtube. wondering if you have a instructional dvd for sale that demonstrates the open stance golf swing basics?
Darian,
John doesn’t have a DVD lesson series. He is trying to cure the world of golf more than he is trying to make money. He preaches that people should trust their genius as athletes and pay close attention to their results. That way, their feedback will feed back into their changes, which are ALWAYS CORRECT. Trust yourself, Darian.

Hi John,
I have been enjoying reading your books. I am looking forward to trying the open stance when the weather gets better here in New York. I was wondering if you have heard of Steve Johnston from Scotland who found what he calls his “eureka swing” in which he sets up with an open stance.
Thanks.
Dennis,
Thank you. I watch everything out there touching on set up to see who knows what. I’ve watched the “Eureka Swing” video. The guy doing it is Steve Johnson? Cool. It’s a fun video showing that the open stance solves problems without getting into why or how. I took it as a testimonial, of sorts. Guys like Johnson are good for getting the word out. I’m grateful. Everyone needs to know there is a better way.
Hi John. I haven’t communicated with you for awhile, but am still an active (but aging!) open stance golfer. I have read all of your books articles. Today, I went to the practice range with full confidence in my swing. Crisis moment!: I started shanking and couldn’t stop. I viewed your “shank” video, but to no avail. What’s particularly frustrating is that my previous practice session was great. Any thoughts re what I should concentrate on would be appreciated. Thanks
John,
Nice talking to you. I’m sure you have it under control now.

John
Would love to speak with you. Is there a number I can call?
I’ll email you.
Where do you teach at in Leesburg VA? Which golf course or range? I’m local and I have never heard of the open stance academy. Very Interested.
William,
I’ve kept a lid on it since moving here from Florida. I came to help my friend build his teaching business, and he recently told me he is making all the money he’d ever need to make. So, I have taken the lid off, so to speak.
I teach at Stoneleigh Golf and Country Club in Round Hill, Virginia. I also have an Open Stance Academy, YouTube Channel. Thanks for reaching out. I hope to meet you one day soon.

Hello John: I live in the Columbia, SC area. Do you know a teacher in my area who can help me with an open stance swing? I am near Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, and Atlanta. When I have experimented with it recently there has been great success. Just struggling with ball position. Thank you. SJA
John,
I used the open stance for years. Then this year, due to increasing age (I’m 65) I decided to try a closed stance. Advantages: made it easier for me to get a fuller shoulder turn and a longer backswing thus giving me more distance. Disadvantages: It doesn’t feel as natural to me as an open stance (I just feel more comfortable with an open stance!) and the closed stance makes it easier for me to come “over the top” sometimes resulting in a top or shank if I’m not careful. Have you gotten this question from seniors before? So many instructors out there seem to be advocating a closed stance for seniors. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi
I just love your book.
Your philosophy is right on target. As a Mechanical Engineer I like the idea that for best results you need a process that insures repeatability. I have read the golf machine but found it hard to follow, your book puts things in terms I really like. I am 68 and have had 4 back surgery’s and a new left hip.
Do you every comment on golf swings that are sent to you via email?
Thanks
John Gregg
